Behavior describes a dog's actions and responses to its environment, governed by the nervous and endocrine systems. The complexity of a dog's behavior tracks the complexity of its nervous system — and younger dogs generally have far more capacity to learn new responses and adjust their behavior than older ones. What shapes a dog's behavior is a mix of genetics, experience and learning, environment, and physiology, and all of them can be worked with intentionally.
Certain developmental windows require specific experiences for a dog to develop normally — and missing those experiences during the sensitive period can leave effects that last a lifetime. Past roughly twelve weeks, it becomes significantly harder for a puppy to learn to accept previously unfamiliar types of beings as social partners. Recognizing these critical windows, and managing a puppy's environment deliberately during them, is one of the most important things we can do to shape its emotional stability, temperament, sociability, confidence, and long-term trainability.

The environment a puppy experiences early in life directly shapes how it processes stress, novelty, and social interaction for years afterward. Early, deliberate, and appropriate intervention can make the difference between a dog that's naturally adaptable and easy to train, and one that's physically and emotionally healthier for it — versus a dog that struggles with confidence or reactivity for the rest of its life.
