A dog that sits, stays, and heels perfectly in a quiet training room can still fall apart the moment a skateboard rolls by, a stranger reaches for its head, or another dog barks from across the street. That gap — between "knows the command" and "does it anywhere" — is the single most common thing families misjudge about their own dog's training.
Obedience means a dog can perform a behavior when conditions are right: low distraction, familiar handler, familiar environment. Reliability means the dog performs that same behavior when conditions are wrong — high arousal, a stranger holding the leash, a squirrel, a doorbell, a parking lot. Most dogs that "know" sit, down, and come were only ever tested in the easy version of that question.
Command-only training builds a narrow response: cue in, behavior out. It doesn't build the dog's ability to self-regulate when no one is cueing anything — which is most of real life. A dog that has only been taught to respond to commands, rather than to hold a state of calm and impulse control, will look trained right up until the moment it genuinely matters: a loose dog approaching, a child running past, a door left open.
Reliable dogs are built on three things that have nothing to do with how many commands they know: drive management (understanding what motivates the dog and how to channel it), threshold work (deliberately practicing at the edge of the dog's comfort zone, not just inside it), and generalization (proofing behavior across locations, distractions, and handlers, not just in the yard where it was taught). A dog that's been through this process doesn't need a command for every situation — it has a default state of control it returns to on its own.

We're not measuring how many commands a dog can perform — we're measuring how the dog behaves under pressure, what its drives are, and what its handler is actually capable of maintaining once training ends.
